Winnie-the-Pooh (AKA Pooh Bear) was created by English author A. A. Milne and illustrator E. H. Shepard in 1925 for the Christmas Eve edition of London's "Evening News". In 1961, The Walt Disney Company purchased rights of the Winnie-the-Pooh stories from the Milne estate. Milne named the character after a teddy bear owned by his son, Christopher Robin Milne, on whom the character Christopher Robin was based. Shepard in turn based his illustrations of Pooh on his own son's teddy bear named Growler. Pooh is naive and slow-witted, but he is also friendly, thoughtful, and steadfast.
