Founded in Dallas, Texas, in 1926, Haggar was established by a 34-year-old Lebanese man named J.M. Haggar. A smart businessman, he used money saved from odd jobs over the years to open a small wear shop that specialized in men’s work pants. The pants were so popular with locals that he expanded his business space and employee roster within three years. Despite the hardships imposed by the Depression, Haggar managed to keep his business afloat. In 1936, he opened a factory in Greenville, Texas. The 1960s and 1970s ushered in the “Imperials” line of dress pants to bridge the gap between dress pants and casual pants. Pre-cuffed pants avoided that annoying tailoring step, and polyester/wool permanent-press pants helped eliminate wrinkles. During this era, Haggar was the top pants brand in the country.
