Skillfully carved using the sgraffito technique, this vintage 1970-80s Mexican Art Pottery Mug by Candida Jimenez is something to see! Made by hand and signed by well known Mexican artist Candida Jimenez, is an outstanding example of sgraffito art. Sgraffito (in Italian "to scratch") is a decorating pottery technique produced by applying layers of color or colors (underglazes or colored slips) to leather hard pottery and then scratching off parts of the layer(s) to create contrasting images, patterns and texture and reveal the clay color underneath. The beautiful ocean imagery of a sea turtle and fish swimming amongst the sea grasses is carved into a rich, mottled dark blue and black glazed exterior. A solid, smooth handle completes this exquisite piece. Interior is finished with a glazed tan. The piece is signed by the artist and professionally authenticated.
