HILL CRAFT By Universal Pottery VTG Serving Platter 12” Leaf & Berries. This MCM piece was likely made in the 40s or 50s and is very rare. The company closed in the 50s so this was likely made in the 40s. The pattern is called Leaf & Berries and appears to be made with sponge painting which was highly popular at the time.
There are only a handful of Hill Craft pieces online, and very few of this pattern and there were no other platters. Some of the pieces were in poor condition with a lot of crazing and discoloration under the glaze. There were two bowls that appeared to be in good condition and there were priced at $35. I used the pricing of these and others as a guide.
Despite its age, this platter is in very condition, there are no chips or cracks and only minimal crazing on the underside, it’s actually only about 2” by 3” section. There is a bit of wearing of the glaze on the edges, more so on the handles.
Not dishwasher safe! This is a bit heavy, it weighs 2lbs 8oz, and packaging will likely be at least 2lbs. I have estimated the total shipping weight at just under 5lbs.
