The vase's story is as follows: Pelops' dad decided to kill him as an offering to the gods; he cut him up, and served him as a stew. Most gods realized that there was something wrong & did not eat, but Demeter ate the left shoulder. Afterwards, Pelops was reassembled and given a new ivory shoulder. He then participated in a chariot race against King Oenomaus for his daughter. Pelops won by messing with the king's wheel bolts. Pelops became King, & held races in honor of Oenomaus: the Olympics.
