I believe the recipient had not tried on an authentic pair of Golden Goose sneakers before and did not realize that the heel sits high (hidden wedge) and they have a distressed look. I made the mistake of indicating that I purchased the shoes from MatchesFashion, a luxury UK retailer. When I went to check the receipt, it was actually Selfridges, another luxury UK retailer. The purchaser used this retailer mixup as a way to return the shoes!

allie00417 @hamer1980 HI! I reached out to both companies, Selfridges and Kurt Geiger, to understand why this would be. Kurt Geiger is the largest luxury shoe retailer in the UK. They operate as a concession (a tenant) and rent space within Selfridges. They pay a portion of each sale to Selfridges as part of their "rent". Kurt Geiger also confirmed that they sell many brands, including Golden Goose.
