hoeftish Measuring my daughter now… is the dress a 21.5” waist or the person’s measurment? Does it require period undergarments? A 9 yr old would probably wear pantaloons and not a hoop but I just want to make sure we have what we need!

thesmiths1996 @hoeftish it will accommodate a hoop breve we've used it with and without. My daughter had a very full petticoat and the bloomers that she wore during "day" events. I'll try to add another picture of her wearing it both ways if I can find them

thesmiths1996 @hoeftish actually, the last several pics are of her wearing it with the hoop. The 21" is the dressmaker's waist measurement of the skirt.

thesmiths1996 @hoeftish ok, so I added a pic of another dress she had that was made to the same measurements and style. She wore an apron to cover the "practicality" aspect of the event we were at. But this is what it would look like without the hoop. If you wanted more volume without a hoop, I'd recommend a "corded petticoat". It's a cotton slip that has rows of thick cording sewn in around the bottom of the slip.

thesmiths1996 @hoeftish It causes the skirt to stand out a bit without being rigid like with a hoop - it's FAR more comfortable and practical for a younger girl and to be more period correct for daytime wear. I hope this isn't too elementary - I mean no offense, but I didn't know these things when we first started reenactment. If we can help in any way, just ask 😊

hoeftish @thesmiths1996 not at all! We are just starting ourselves. This was really helpful! I’m going to measure her one more time but I think 21” is too small. I really want this to work! Know a period way to add an inch?

thesmiths1996 @hoeftish let me look at the waistband in the morning... it's possible that you could just move the button because there's usually extra length in the waistbands so that you can adjust with growth and the pintucks were actually put into those garments so you could take them out to to lengthen as the girls grow taller. Garments were intended to last a lot longer age span back then than we typically accommodate for now.

thesmiths1996 @hoeftish Fabrics were expensive and nice dresses needed to be worn for a good while and even passed down. Anyway! I'll check the button placement and I'll also do a flat measurement in that waist band - that's much easier to compare to modern clothing and give an idea of a much better fit.
