In 1931 George's family moved to Canada from Czechoslovakia when he was 6. After graduating college with a degree in electrical engineering he decided to study sculpture at the Beaux Arts School in Montreal. He then apprenticed with a few local jewelers. In 1957 he opened his own store to sell custom designs in Montreal. In 1962 Brooks moved to Santa Barbara, California, with his wife. Shortly after this he moved his store to Montecito. Here he continued to create and sell one of a kind original jewelry until his retirement in 1991. His pieces were generally made on commisssion. He never cast or mass-produced pieces.
