The Super Bowl may well be America’s ultimate spectacle, and this year’s contest was a classic battle between the New York Giants and the Denver Broncos. Prowling the sidelines to catch every nuance, was LeRoy Neiman. True to form, Neiman captured the real essence of the game. Despite pre-game focus on Denver quarterback John Elway, (sharp-eyed fans can see his number seven on the far sidelines), the game turned on the struggle between New York quarterback (and MVP) Phill Simms and the Bronco’s defense- just the scene selected by Neiman. Giant fans will know Simms (11) as well as line stalwarts Godfrey (61) and Ard (67), even without seeing the names on their uniforms. bronco supporters will recognize linebacker Tom Jackson (57) wrapped around Simms’ ankle and Karl Mecklenberg (77) charging hard from the right. The serigraph is dominated by shades of strong, primary colors. In addition to the Giant cobalt, one sees that the strands are awash in golden yellow sunshine and that the sky is streaked with rosy pink and celestial blue. The green of the playing field provides a foundation for the serigraph. The Rose Bowl scoreboard is flanked by local palm trees. In the distance, the San Gabriel Mountains’ rich blue recalls the Giant uniforms.
