Beautiful watercolor signed by Spicuzza in the lower right. A refreshing scene depicting many figures playing in the surf. In a later frame; 7.5" x 9.5" (w/o frame), 10 x 12" (w/frame). Francesco J. Spicuzza (1883-1962) was born in Sicily and immigrated to the U.S. when he was 8. He studied at the Milwaukee Art Students League under a follower of the Munich School, but he later changed his style to a more impressionist manner. He typically painted beach scenes, often, as is the case here, portraying women and children in the waves at Bradford and McKinley Beaches in Milwaukee. He summed up his career in a simple, yet profound statement: I want to paint happiness. This has been in my family for many years. Maybe it will find its way into your home for your enjoyment.
