The top layer of the cutting mat is the same as the traditional cutting boards offered by Fiskars, but the bottom is an attached piece that rotates so you do not have to bring your cutting blade up while you cut the entire length of the project you are working on. On a personal level, I sew a LOT and I use this type of mat all the time. The reason is simple: I need my lines as straight as possible. If I do not need to bring my rotary blade up while cutting (IE: a rotary board like this), then I will have a more precise cut. All of us quilters, crafters, sewers, etc., understand that small gap that could happen and has happened. Oh that is too frustrating for words.
