In 1893 Princess Mary of Teck wed the Duke of York (Queen Elizabeths paternal grandparents). The County of Dorset presented a ribbon brooch to the new bride. When Queen Elizabeth got married in 1947 Queen Mary gave her the ribbon brooch.
