Ikat is over a 5,000 year old artisanal technique primarily from India and Indonesia. Ikat is done by marking off designs on long bundles of yarn, applying bands accordingly, then resist-dyeing sections of the yarns before weaving the fabric on a loom. The blurriness of ikat is indicative of the difficulty of aligning the threads to create the distinctive patterns.
