About Esprit:
Esprit was the brand that expressed its European chic and devil-may-care attitude through vivid colors, comfy silhouettes and it’s very own prominently featured clean and bold sans serif font.
The brand was founded in 1968 by Susie and Doug Tompkins, who apparently sold clothing they’d designed out of the back of their station wagon. They founded their company with—according to their website—a focus on taking care of their employees, the environment and the world at large. Seeking to create designs that were “inspiring and fun”, Esprit ultimately succeeded.
In 2011, they closed all of their North American stores. It was a quiet downslide, mostly founded in the rise of 1990s grunge and anti-corporate sensibilities. In late 2024, after 56 years in business, Esprit closed their doors worldwide after an amazing designer fashion run that brought so much joy to streets internationally
