Understood you have no knowledge about prior ownership but I need to ask since cat dander can attach to item from handling and shipping it out, are you a cat owner? We have so much animal dander allergies and need to pre-treat item before washing .

@gladc1006 we don't have a cat, but we do have a dog. I wore it last winter and I washed it with clear detergent. if that helps :)
