The album was named after the Caribou Ranch recording studio in Nederland, Colorado, where part of the album was recorded. The album was released to mixed reviews initially, with retrospective reviews being much more generous and accurate as the album would be Eltons' fourth chart-topper in the United States and his third in the United Kingdom. The album reached #1 in five countries, including the US, where it stayed on the Billboard 200 chart right through 1975 to end up at #71. 'Caribou' contains the singles 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me', which reached #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and 'The B*tch Is Back', which reached number #4.
