Presenting a Fabulous, Edwardian, Nickel Silver, Round Pocket Vesta Case, with the Enameled Coat of Arms of Portrush, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
During the Victorian and Edwardian Eras, Vesta Cases (Match Safes) were used to contain matches and to keep the matches from spontaneously combusting.
Measuring 1/3/4" in diameter x 1/2" deep, the Vesta lid opens easily and closes with a snap. The bottom has a match strike, and on the side, a bail that would attach to a watch chain.
Composed of Nickel Silver, with a red, white, blue, yellow, and gold enameled Heraldic Shield of Portrush, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, and the motto, "'Sero Sed Serio" (Late, but in Earnest).
Portrush was a very well-known and popular seaside resort before WWI.
Not marked as to metal content or maker.
Exceptionally Good Condition. This piece has not been cleaned or polished. Some metal wear is evident on the back from honest use.
