This Japanese export porcelain is known as “Dragonware”. It’s decorated with a blue-eyed gray dragon using a technique called “moriage”, meaning, raised enamels. This technique creates a 3-dimensional effect, sort of like cake frosting.
Produced starting around the 1880’s, this ashtray likely dates to the 1930’s/1940’s & is handmade. It appears to have glass beads for eyes, indicating it could be earlier than the 1930s. Not marked but it does appear to have had a sticker on the back due to remaining glue residue.
Colors include reds, blues, grays, white & black raised enamels that constitute the dragon’s head, body and wings, and the dragon has a gold painted underbelly. She’s flying while grasping a circular gold pearl in one of her claws. There are gold, blue and red clouds or flames, and the cigarette resting areas are painted gold as well.
Used but in excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks or breaks. Smoke-free and pet-free home. Comes with a correctly-sized plate holder for display.
