The Djer-Kiss Powder Compact Vanity Case is a rare and exquisite piece from the Art Nouveau era, manufactured between 1917-1925.
The French perfumer Kerkoff produced the cosmetics, while the American importer, the Alfred H. Smith Company, was responsible for the packaging, which was manufactured by the Scovill Manufacturing Co.
The design is in the Art Nouveau style, silver plated, and features a raised (repoussé) image of a boy and girl fairy kissing amidst flowers on the lid.
The fairy theme was inspired by the advertising illustrations of artists like Maxfield Parrish and Willy Pogany, who worked with the company from 1916 to 1925.
This specific compact design was patented on May 19, 1925, and had a very short production run, ending in January 1926 when the company was sold. This short run makes the compact a rare and sought-after collectible today.
The case typically contained compartments for both loose face powder and rouge, a two-sided mirror, and a patented powder-sifting plate.
This particular compact powder-sifting plate is dated 5-1925, called a Poudre, and is removable. The blush holding plate is dated Aug. 14-1917 and is also removable. Powder puffs and rouge makeup appear to be original. Double-sided mirror is intact. Piece measures approximately 2 inches square and 1/2 inch in height. Beautiful, rare, antique piece of history.
