Unusual handmade enameled metal belt buckle that was acquired in China in the 1940s by one of my traveling relatives. It is likely from the 1920s or earlier. The metal is heavy weight & the buckle is very sturdy. It has wonderful weight & appears to have been a man's belt buckle that was once worn regularly.
My relative was a doctor & a member of a medical team working in China. This buckle was given to him as payment for medical treatment of an elderly man by his son! He was taken aboard a Junk on which the family lived - to treat the ailing man. People who did not have money would offer anything of value that they had including foodstuffs such as live chickens, rice & eggs. This buckle was given to the doctor in thanks and as payment for treating this gentleman. We have had this piece in my family forever ( since before I was born!) & I have decided, that it should find a home with someone who would love it & use it. It needs to be worn, admired & gotten out into the world again! Incidentally, the elderly patient survived & got better!
Size: Buckled it is 2" high x 4.5" wide. It is made of two 2" square pieces brought together & hooked in the center.
It is strong & solid. It will not bend when worn. So it will be sturdy & usable on a regular basis. I think the metal from which it is made is brass. It feels as if it were a warrior's belt buckle - it is strong & excuses strength.
Origin: China
Date: 1920s or earlier ..... could be considerably older
