Deep Purple Fluorite Rainbow Sphere | A Grade
What is Fluorite?
❤️ Fluorite is a part of the halide group of non-silicate minerals. In fluorite, the element calcium ionically bonds to fluoride ions. Fluorite’s chemical formula is CaF2.
Fluorite comes from the Latin, fluere = “to flow” (due to its use as a flux). The word “fluorescent” comes from fluorite, as it often displays this effect. Fluorine also derives it’s name from fluorite, as fluorite is a major source of the element.
It comes in a large variety of colors, including purple, lilac, pink, blue, green, golden-yellow, brown, and sometimes colorless. Some even call it “the most colorful mineral in the world”. Fluorite has an isometric crystal system. Its morphology is primarily cubes, less often octahedrons, some hexoctahedrons and tetrahedrons, and rarely dodecahedrons. Twinning is often seen in fluorite, as well.
Fluorite is a reference species on Mohs Hardness Scale, representing the minerals with a hardness of 4. It has a vitreous (or glassy) luster, but is dull when massive. The perfectionist in me is pleased by fluorite’s four perfect cleavage planes.
Fluorite is an extremely popular mineral specimen for collectors. It is also used as a flux (mentioned above) in iron smelting, a gemstone, a source of fluorine, and in some special optical lenses.
