The fine bone china Crown Staffordshire table bell in this collection features a richly colored design based on an original 16th-century Chinese Wan Li hand painting. The ceramic arts flourished during the Ming dynasty, and by the reign of Emperor Wan Li, from 1573 to 1620, the practice of decorating porcelain wares with purple, yellow and green overglaze enamels had become prevalent. During Wan Li's rule, this popular three-color scheme was expanded to include underglaze blue and a distinctive overglaze red. That red shade in the large, informal flower motif on the Crown Stafford-shire bell is vividly dramatized against the snow-white background of the bone china. The deep purple color of the leaves and branches is outlined in gold.
