Dan Millstein was a New York Coat and Suit Maker of the late 1940s to 1960s. Millstein did Balmain and Balenciaga adaptations in the early 1950s. Marilyn Monroe married Joe DiMaggio in a Millstein designed suit. Calvin Klein got his start at Millstein in 1962 as a sketch artist.
The exquisite tailoring and construction of this coat speak to the influence of the Couture Houses on the designer Dan Millstein The silk velvet is interlined with interfacing to maintain the shape of the coat. The body of the coat is constructed of nine pieces of fabric to create a perfect trapeze line. (A normal coat body is made with 3-4 pieces of fabric.) See photos of interior construction.
