From 1818 he trained with Rottmann in Heidelberg and at the Munich Academy. From 1823 to 1827 he went on a study trip to Italy, where he became one of the leading landscape painters of German-Roman painting. He was one of the Heidelberg Romantic painters and created many romantic landscapes from his homeland.
