This is an authentic balsa wood mask from the Boruca indigenous community in Costa Rica. It is a typical ‘diablito’ or little devil mask, shoring animals and nature symbols.
The history of these masks began over 500 years ago, during the Spanish Conquest. 'Diablito' masks, or little devil masks were created and worn with the intent to scare the unwelcome invaders back to Spain.
This mask can be hung on a wall or propped up on a table. It has a minor imperfection on the bird’s beak (see pic) but is in otherwise great condition. These masks were craftsman added his contact info on the back.
Very light mask since it’s balsa wood. Approximately 12” long.
