Vintage Tin San Francisco Cable Car 512 — Bay & Taylor Streets — Made in Japan, Original Box
This vintage lithographed tin cable car captures the classic San Francisco charm of the Bay & Taylor and Powell & Market routes. Made in Japan, this piece is beautifully preserved in its original illustrated box and appears to have been stored rather than played with.
The tin body displays bright, saturated colors and crisp detailing, with interior wooden-style benches and window framing typical of mid-century Japanese tin litho craftsmanship. When rolled, it produces a gentle “dinging” sound reminiscent of the real cable car bells of Market Street.
The original red-and-yellow box features vivid period artwork of the San Francisco skyline and cable car turntable, with a printed price tag of $6.50 from the Cable Car Museum — adding to its collectible appeal. This example represents the Market Street Railway Co. Car No. 512, an iconic symbol of San Francisco tourism from the post-war era through the 1970s.
Historical note:
Japanese tin lithograph toys like this were exported heavily between the 1950s–1970s and are now highly sought after by collectors for their detailed printing, mechanical charm.
