Chico's FAS, Inc., the parent company of the Chico's brand, was founded in 1983 by Marvin and Helene Gralnick on Sanibel Island, Florida. The brand evolved from a small gift shop selling Mexican folk art and apparel into a multinational women's clothing retailer.
A parrot named Chico: While living in Mexico in the 1970s, the Gralnicks fell in love with Mexican folk art. After a financial crisis forced them to move to Sanibel Island, they continued to sell Mexican imports. They opened a shop called Folk Art Specialties, but later renamed it after a friend's pet parrot.
From folk art to fashion: The store's Mexican fisherman sweaters quickly outsold everything else, prompting the couple to pivot their business toward apparel.
Brand expansion: A second boutique opened in 1985 on Captiva Island, followed by the first franchise location in Minnesota in 1987. The company's unique, art-infused store designs were created in Marvin Gralnick's woodshop.
Going public and major growth (1991–2010)
Designed in-house: By 1992, Chico's was operating 60 boutiques and had begun creating its own private-label prints and patterns.
