It is possible that the name refers to Margaret Tafoya (1904–2001), a highly influential potter from the Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico.
Large vessels: Tafoya was internationally renowned for her skill in creating uncommonly large clay vessels by hand, using traditional coil-building methods. She was often known simply for her big pots.
Deep carvings: Along with her husband, Alcario, she was known for deeply carving traditional designs, such as the bear claw, into the polished surfaces of her blackware and redware pottery.
