Amazing 22" tall carved wooden figure from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea.
These figures traditionally depict a spirit or ancestral figure, they were not worn as masks but hung in the men's spirit house (haus tambaran). Carved from wood and painted with natural pigments. It features a stylized face and a smaller figure carved at the bottom. Often referred to as "cult hooks" or "suspension hooks".
These impressive figures are believed to protect against bad magic, used during ceremonies and festivals. Would be a stunning addition to any home and would be a great conversation piece.
