This is a Carry A. Nation (Caroline Amelia Nation) of Kansas
(1846 - 1911) Temperance hatchet brooch/pin. The brooch is made of gilt brass, mother of pearl and a rhinestone. The approximate measurements are:
3/4 inch (wide)
2 inches (high)
It has an original C clasp for a closure. The pins were sold to earn money for the Temperance Organization of Kansas. Carry A. Nation said she had a vision that God directed her to take physical action against taverns & saloons between 1900 to 1910 with a hatchet, which she called a Smasher. She was arrested more than 30 times for her "hatchetations" where she entered saloons singing hymns and praying while smashing away with her signature hatchet. Carry was called "The Joint Smasher".
