Carry A. Nation (Caroline Amelia Nation) Hatchet Pin Temperance Brooch Gilt Pin

This is a Carry A. Nation (Caroline Amelia Nation) of Kansas (1846 - 1911) Temperance hatchet brooch/pin. The brooch is made of gilt brass, mother of pearl and a rhinestone. The approximate measurements are: 3/4 inch (wide) 2 inches (high) It has an original C clasp for a closure. The pins were sold to earn money for the Temperance Organization of Kansas. Carry A. Nation said she had a vision that God directed her to take physical action against taverns & saloons between 1900 to 1910 with a hatchet, which she called a Smasher. She was arrested more than 30 times for her "hatchetations" where she entered saloons singing hymns and praying while smashing away with her signature hatchet.
