"When We Were the New Boys," Rod Stewart's 1998 album, is a mix of covers and a few original tracks. It showcases Stewart's attempt to recapture the spirit of his early Faces/Every Picture Tells a Story era by incorporating songs by Britpop artists and other artists from the early 1990s. The album includes covers of "Cigarettes and Alcohol" by Oasis, "Rocks" by Primal Scream, and "Ooh La La" by The Faces, as well as tracks by Nick Lowe, Graham Parker, and Ron Sexsmith. While not always praised to the same extent as his earlier work, the album was seen as a refreshing change for Stewart, and many found the cover choices to be fitting and successful.
