Buttery Yellow, round, dyed Tagua Nut stretchy bracelet. Graduating beads. Aka vegetable ivory.
Made from very hard white endosperm of seeds of certain palm trees. Natural seeds sourced from Tagua palm trees, native to tropical rainforests of South America. Rich history dating back centuries. Hardness & workability makes ideal for carving intricate ornaments. Collectors value unique texture.
Because it’s naturally durable & similar to elephant ivory, Tagua nut has been used to make wide varieties of household objects. Before advent of plastics, garment industry used Tagua nut to make buttons. Historically Tagua was also fashioned into chess pieces, Cane handles & dice.
Several tropical American palms produce vegetable ivory, but 1of most important is Ecuadorian Ivory Palm. Main source of Ecuadorian Tagua, a botanical alternative to ivory.
In Ecuador, nuts inside fruit, used to make buttons, jewelry & statues, our Tagua nut powder is a byproduct of this craft. Remaining nut pieces saved & ground to produce natural, biodegradable scrub. Amazonian Indians believed vegetable ivory or Togua nut brings prosperity, happiness, love & abundance. Mayans, Incas, Aztecs & Natives of South & Central America used Tagua nut for emotional & spiritual health & well-being. To them, Tagua is sacred.
