Brown agate's chemical properties are defined by its composition of silicon dioxide (\(SiO_{2}\)), the same chemical formula as quartz, and its classification as a silicate mineral. It is a cryptocrystalline variety of chalcedony, meaning it is composed of microscopic and submicroscopic fibers of quartz, often mixed with another quartz polymorph called moganite.
