It is a distinctly Mid Century rendition of the Madonna & Child in shades of blue, black, gray and white with the warmth of the wood shining through. SIZE: Measures 14.5” tall by nearly 4” wide and .5” deep. Bro. Matthew Gallagher (1923-2007) was a Missouri-based artist and Franciscan monk. He attended art school in the Post-WWII era before joining the Franciscan Order in 1956. As a monk, he continued to paint throughout the Mid Century period—always on wood and often featuring themes related to nature (animals, mushrooms, fruit) as well as religion. — 071824
