This is a Philmont Scout Ranch coffee mug made for the Boy Scouts of America. This one is from the 1970's. The Philmont Bull is featured. In 1944, Dr. E. K. Fretwell, who was then Chief Scout Executive patterned this bull from one found in the tile mosaic located at the downstairs entrance to the Villa Philmont. A first year camper or leader would receive the head of the bull to sew over the left pocket of the shirt. The next year, a participant got the body portion of the bull. The third year, the tail. So the Bull became a symbol of the Philmont Scout Ranch. This one is in good condition, but there are three chips on the rim of the cup, and the gold highlight is rubbing off in one area.
