Paperback, 244 pages, published 1999. National Book Award Finalist. Fabulous illustrations by the author, and contains a glossary of Ojibwa terms as well as an author's note on the Ojibwa language. The publisher lists this as appropriate for ages 9 and up. Excellent used condition, particularly for the age of the book. There's one library stamp inside the front cover (see pics), but otherwise this copy is very gently loved. The spine is solid, all pages intact. No writing, no rips, no stains. "Seven-year-old Omakayas' name means "little frog" because her first step was a hop. These are the captivating tales of an Ojibwa family, as they live through the joys of summer and the perils of winter on an island in Lake Superior in 1847. The circular motion of the Ojibwa culture is represented through the motions of the four seasons (Neebin, Dagwaging, Biboon, and Zeegwun). As the months pass, the community works together to hunt, build, gather, and survive according to the needs of the tribe and according to each season. Omakayas also cares for her family during sickness. Why didn't she get smallpox when so many others perished? She learns about her connection to all nature, and discovers her gift of dreams." ๐ŸŒฑ ๐ŸŒž ๐Ÿ‚ โ„๏ธ ๐Ÿชถ
