Barbara Heard Ceramic Lantern Signed Bird Head Blue Gray Handmade Pottery Candle
The bird kachina inspired this hand-thrown candle lantern. The rich colors created through the pit-firing process are enhanced with a turquoise Egyptian paste bear fetish and antique nails. Pit fired pottery is formed on the potter’s wheel and then fired to 1,000 degrees. Then it is placed in seawater to absorb the salt. A pit is dug in the sand and lined with the pottery, sawdust and other combustible materials. Sea breeze and weather conditions change the wisps of smoke as they bring color to the pottery. The fire burns at least eight hours before a beautiful piece emerges out of the smoke and ash.
Measures approximately 8.5“ tall x 8.5“ wide.
