Barbara Bates (Tennessee, USA) Sgraffito Stoneware Candle Holder Decorated with A Country Mill Scene. A circa 1993 stoneware candle holder or unique pen/pencil holder from Barbara Bates. All scenes are cared at random and freehand using sgraffito--"scratching in clay." This carving is done after the piece is built. After firing, the piece is shaded and colored slips are applied. This is stoneware clay so a second firing is done to 2300 degrees, making the piece dishwasher and microwave safe, with lead-free glaze. This candle holder measures 4 1/4" across the rim and sits 5 1/2" tall. The bottom is signed by the artist and the condition is very good.
