Antique Wedding Shoes by A.J. Cammeyer – Circa 1890s-1920s
Size: 6B
Color: Ivory, cream
Rare pair of ivory satin wedding or evening shoes made by the esteemed New York shoemaker Alfred J. Cammeyer.
A remarkable example of high-end women's footwear from the late Victorian and Edwardian era, circa the 1890s-1920s.
Features:
- Maker: A.J. Cammeyer (label inside: “A. J. Cammeyer, 6th Ave. cor. 20th St. N.Y.”)
- Material: Ivory silk satin upper
- Heel: Low Louis-style heel (covered in satin) 1.5" at the back
- Toe: Pointed toe with high vamp
- Ornament: Gathered rosette with large faux mother-of-pearl buckle at vamp
- Size: Marked size 6B
- Sole: Leather with 'CAMMEYER' stamped on bottom
Condition:
In very good antique condition. There is some age-related soiling inside the footbed and gentle surface wear on the soles. The satin maintains its luster and is structurally sound.
Probably worn once for a wedding or a special occasion.
Historical Context:
Similar examples by Alfred J. Cammeyer are held in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Notably, the Met includes Cammeyer wedding and formal shoes from as early as 1896, very similar in construction, heel shape, and decoration to this pair. The style reflects transitional Edwardian-Victorian taste, favoring elegance with a sculptural silhouette.
Though the pair is in great condition and wearable, these are perfect for collectors of antique/vintage fashion and shoe lovers.
