A stunning pair of cabinet portrait plates by "Sevres". Measuring 8.5 inches in diameter, these pieces feature hand-painted, Empire silhouetted young ladies on transfer ware. The one in blue depicts Spring and the the lovely lady in white wearing a rose crown is Summer. The rich cranberry boarder is adorned with intricate gilded lace patterns. The complete set would include Fall and Winter; these are extras from another set.
I've done extensive research on the marks; to the best of my knowledge, this is quite possibly a Sevres plate from 1754 which was never used and re-fired at a later date. The interlaced L's with the A is a Sevres mark dated 1754; HOWEVER, because its also stamped France, it signifies a re-firing between 1891 - 1920. The photo showing the black dots on the back of plate are also indicators of a second re-fire, glaze, etc. This was common when manufacturers had extra, unpainted plates and resold them to other manufacturers who then put their own marks on top. Porcelain dated before 1891 would not include the country name, only the town or origin of the country it was made.
I've only come across one other in a different color boarder so they are a bit unusual.
Please see pics for noted blemishes; there’s a couple surface hairline cracks in the glaze on back of one of the plates that do not go through as well as afore mentioned black impurity spots caused by second firing.
