This is a beautiful and unique 10k gold Victorian Mourning brooch with plaited/woven hair of a loved one has a unique inscription on the reverse. There is a metal frame on the inside to add strength and with a thick layer of 10k gold added to the metal frame.
These brooch pins were worn by the Victorian women as a memorial to a loved one. This particular example has antique seed pearls around the woven hair panel in the center. The black most likely jet but hard to tell when it is set in this beautiful gold scrolled border.
The brooch has an inscription on the back which is written under a scene of a star in the sky reflected in the sea below. This is such a beautiful sentiment of the lost loved one becoming a star in the sky and still having that connection to the earth by the person whom loves and mourns them. The inscription reads "T.S.B. to A.L.M. May 1st 1851.
It fastens securely with a tube hinge and a C clasp. It also has a large size loop for a safety chain. A Victorian lady would have worn this brooch at the centre of the collar.
