19th Century Ambrotype photograph in an elaborately decorated Union Case, c. 1839-1860.
The daguerreotype image developed in 1839 was the first photographic process with the image being formed on the surface of a silver plate that reflects similar to a mirror. It can easily be rubbed off with the fingers and will oxidize if exposed to air so daguerreotypes were mounted in sealed cases or frames with a glass cover. The process was complex and labor intensive with only one original being produced from each photograph.
This photo is a 9th plate Ambrotype image featuring a woman and has a mirror like reflection. The metal bezel around the photo is pinchbeck, a soft gold colored alloy which is decorated with a beautiful and intricate design. The photo is housed in a "Union Case”.
This case is in excellent condition with only normal wear. The interior is embellished with a dark purple colored velvet cover with an embossed design which also helps to protect the delicate photo and bezel.
