Antique Simons Bros. 1893 Columbian Exposition Sterling Silver Thimble Dtd 1892 Very good condition This is an antique Simons Bros. Sterling silver thimble1893 Columbian Expositiondated 1892. The thimble does not have the Simons Brothers makers markband reads Worlds Columbian Exposition 1892 on a textured backgroundmarked 11 on band cartoucheraised chased scroll rim. The Columbian Exposition was held in Chicago in 1893, although it was originally planned for 1892. Simons Brothers & Co. set up an exhibit at the exposition where thimbles were displayed for purchase by the public. Simons also created a display showing how they actually made these Columbian Exposition thimbles. Workmen applied the band design, added the knurling, and burnished them. Observers were able to purchase the thimbles, such as this one that was probably made on site. None of these on-site made thimbles were marked with the Simons makers mark. Making the thimble interesting is that it was probably crafted at the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition, and purchased by someone, wanting a memory of their time at the exposition. The thimble is in excellent vintage condition with some age and use wear. This wonderful thimble makes a nice addition to your collection.
