The Rise and Fall of Cannetille Jewels
Cannetille work was inspired by embroidery, reputedly the embroidery found in traditional peasant garments. Some sources mention 18th-century Portugal or India as a source, some mention France. The simple filigree tendrils that started to appear in the fashion and jewelry world around 1820 transformed into cannetille during the following decade. One can find cannetille work from almost every European nation during the 1820s and 1830s.
What is cannetille?
Cannetille is extremely fine three-dimentional wirework in gold or silver and often accompanied by little globules.
Cannetille uses thin threads of gold or silver and winds, coils, twists and turns them, sometimes embellishing with tiny granulations or little globules. Rosettes and pyramids were often built up from tiny wire strands. This results in extremely fine and delicate mounts of great beauty.
Cannetille incorporates filigree work, but goes a step further as it is 3-dimentional, whereas regular filigree work is more flat.
