1885 Primer of Physiology and Hygiene, Early Anatomy and Medicine Book for Schools, Stimulants and Narcotics, 19th Century Medical School.
Dr. William Thayer Smith wrote "Primer of Physiology and Hygiene", published by Ivison, Blakeman, Taylor, & Company of New York and Chicago in 1885. The subtitle of the book is "A Textbook for Primary Classes, with Special Reference to the Effects of Stimulants and Narcotics on the Human System." This is not a reproduction, not a reprint, not a digital print ... this is an authentic antiquarian book of the period. The book was intended to bridge the gap between institutions of advanced medical knowledge and school students and the general public. The small hard cover book has 174 pages presented over 10 chapters covering: Introduction; The Body; The Muscles; The Heart and Blood Vessels; The Blood, Wear and Repair, The Lymphatics; Food and Water, Stimulants and Narcotics; Digestion, Absorption; Respiration, The Voice; The Nervous System, The Eye, The Ear; The Framework. There are 42 illustrations, all in black and white, plus a glossary and an index.
The book is in good condition, with secure binding, complete and intact pages, some discoloration of the page perimeters due to age, and heavy wear to the covers and spine. Inside the front cover is a rose sticker and writing in cursive that reads "Prof. Abe Feldman of Allentown PA". The compact hard cover book measures 7 1/8" by 5" by 1/2". In good condition
