This is a once-in-a-lifetime find!!! I got my hot little hands on what I'm as sure as I can be without a professional appraisal is a genuine Hubbell bead and Navajo bench bead necklace. It is strung on the old style cord. You can see in the pictures that the bench beads are handmade silver.
For a bit of background, Hubbell beads were used in place of turquoise on the Hubbell Trading Post. They imported the glass beads that looked like turquoise from Czechoslovakia, and the Navajo added them to their silver jewelry. These beads and necklace were most likely made between 1915 and 1920, making this glorious necklace over a hundred years old.
It is very unusual to find a necklace like this outside of a museum that also features Navajo silversmithing. It is in wonderful condition. I had to give it a very gentle bath in warm water to clean off some gunk, but there are two bench beads that didn't lose their tarnish (see pics). Otherwise this is in almost perfect condition. Still a bit of tarnish, only got the lightest of baths, so despite the insane shine, you can still see the patina of age.
It all checks out.
I think I found a near museum quality piece of wearable art.
Very heavy. No clasp, only the string as you can see in the pictures.
Not signed but the style is unmistakable.
12mm Hubbell beads, 6mm bench beads
