This is a vintage Hubley cast iron golfer doorstop, specifically known as the "A Difficult Lie" or the "Overhead Swinging Golfer" model.
This highly sought-after collectible was produced by the Hubley Manufacturing Company, which operated from the late 1800s to the mid-20th century.
This rare doorstop dates to the 1920s or 1930s, and depicts a determined grey-haired golfer dressed in Edwardian golf attire including windowpane knickers. He is caught in mid-swing with his eyes fixed on the golf ball on the grass.
The number 238 is molded into the hollowed-out back of the item.
This doorstop appears on page 211 in “The Doorstop Book: An Encyclopedia of Doorstop Collecting" c2006 by John C. & Nancy M. Smith.
