In 1644, the Manchus, a semi-nomadic people from northeast of the Great Wall, conquered the crumbling Ming state and established their own Qing (or Pure) dynasty, which lasted nearly 300 years. This cute little bud vase is probably from the latter part of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
This is an excellent Famille Jaune (yellow family) lidded sugar bowl from around 1900. You can tell the newer Famille Jaune by its stronger yellow color and by having the words ‘Made in China’ or ‘China’ accompanying the marks on the bottom. This fine antique specimen has a pleasing pastel yellow coloring and the small firing flaws you see on porcelain made in China in the late 1800’s.
The marks on the bottom read “Made In The Reign Of Qinglong” - it is likely apocryphal and was put on this bowl as tribute to earlier generations. The bowl measures almost 4.5 inches tall (with the lid on) by 7.5 inches wide. It is in very good condition for its age with just a decades old stable crack on the bottom and a tiny firing flaw on the rim of the lid (see photos).
