They helped button up boots, hook-up corsets and helped button all those tiny buttons on shoes and things back then. This is pearly celluloid laminated to apple juice (not Bakelite) celluloid. Hook appears to be steel. Nowadays? I'm sure there are plenty of uses but this is a great decorative / display item for a vanity. ...and since I forgot to Take a ruler shot, It's 6" long. No flaws.
