Antique Lacquered Betel Box or Burmese “Kun-it”, handmade in Myanmar, circa late 19th century.
This deeply colored cylindrical box is comprised of two pieces (a base container and tall lid) constructed from finely woven bamboo with black pitch as filler; multiple layers of tinted lacquer create the hard, glossy surface in orange, dark red and black. The deep red color derives from cinnabar powder mixed with sap. The incised pattern is drawn by hand with a needle point tool. It does not have any inserts or internal trays.
Betel chewing, which dates back thousands of years in South Asia and the pacific region, played a significant role in the cultural and ritual life of the Burmese. Betel boxes were a symbol of hospitality, often brought out at social gatherings. Sometimes used to store tobacco.
Beautiful decorative and storage piece for your home.
SIZE: Measures about 4 1/8” H by 5 1/8” W.
CONDITION: This antique betel box has age-related wear including surface cracking and chips along both rims, which add to its charm and authenticity. Price reflects condition.
